ne person is dead and two others are missing after a landslide struck the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) in Central Sulawesi over the weekend, the latest in a series of fatal work-related accidents at the sprawling nickel processing hub.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday, when four hours of torrential rain triggered a landslide at one of the Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF) in the industrial park, burying four excavator operators.
Tailings are the residual materials left after extracting the target mineral from ore. They often consist of crushed rock, water, trace amounts of metals such as copper, mercury, cadmium and zinc, as well as processing additives such as petroleum byproducts, sulfuric acid and cyanide.
One operator was rescued shortly after the incident, while another was found dead on Sunday at around 6:30 p.m.
“We have mobilized hundreds of rescue personnel and heavy equipment to locate the remaining victims,” said IMIP spokesperson Dedy Kurniawan on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.
Dedy added that all the victims were employees of the local contractor, PT Morowali Investasi Konstruksi Indonesia.
