View all search resultsIn Central Java, protesters responded by burning and vandalizing multiple regional legislative council (DPRD) buildings and police stations across the province. Cities affected included Kediri, Pekalongan, Surakarta, Brebes, Jepara and Magelang.
Several houses owned by state officials and House of Representatives lawmakers as well as police stations and public facilities were damaged during protests unfolding in Jakarta and other regions across the country in the past few days, with at least three people killed during an escalated rally.
The hardest hit region is Sayung district, where nearly half of the 20 villages face daily tidal floods, usually between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Floodwaters often rise as high as 30 centimeters and worsen during the rainy season.
According to authorities, Brig. Eka Zidan, a Central Java Police officer, was allegedly captured by a group of protesters while going undercover at the May Day rally outside the Central Java governor’s office. He was reportedly detained for several hours at a Diponegoro University campus in Pleburan.
Over a thousand workers and students gathered outside the Central Java governor’s office on Thursday morning to mark Labor Day, demanding better welfare, stronger protection and the abolition of exploitative contracts and outsourcing.
