View all search resultsCritics have decried the government’s recent decision to lift a ban on the recruitment and placement of Indonesian migrant workers, which was suspended in March when the country was dealing with the early emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah said that 88,973 migrant workers were ready to be sent abroad to 14 countries, namely Algeria, Australia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Kuwait, Maldives, Nigeria, United Arab Emirates, Poland, Qatar, Taiwan, Turkey, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
From the critical reading of Migrant CARE, this declaration is very normative and does not address the crucial issues regarding the COVID-19 outbreak and its impact on the vulnerable communities in the region, especially migrant workers.
