Operation Tinombala in fighting the East Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) terror group will extend its operation by three months from the original ending date of Jan. 3 to ensure the complete elimination of the group and its power and influences, a top security official has said.
As terrorism is still regarded as one of the nation’s most pressing security issues, the National Police will continue Operation Tinombala to pursue the remaining members of the East Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) in Poso, Central Sulawesi, next year.
Maj. Gen. Ganip Warsito, commander of the Military Area Command (Kodam) XIII/Merdeka in Manado, North Sulawesi, said the Indonesian Military (TNI) was ready to continuously support Operation Tinombala to search for remaining people of the East Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) terror group previously led by terrorist Santoso.
Indonesian Army chief of staff Gen. Mulyono has said the government may grant amnesty to East Indonesia Mujahiddin (MIT) members who are still at large. However, they should still need to face the legal process for committing attacks against security personnel, he said.
National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian expressed his thanks to Indonesian Military commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo over the latter’s support for Operation Tinombala, which led to the death of Indonesia’s most wanted terrorist Santoso in a shootout in Poso, Central Sulawesi, Monday.
The death of Santoso, the leader of the East Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) terrorist group, has demoralized his followers as they have lost a leader who had become a prime figure not only in the group but also in radical movements in Indonesia, the National Police chief has said.
