View all search resultsA new task force involving the SOEs, tourism and transportation ministries is set to start working within the next two weeks to ramp up both foreign and domestic tourism through a variety of measures, including harmonizing regulations, according to the SOEs minister.
While conceding that visitor numbers had not returned to pre-pandemic levels, the tourism ministry highlighted that it had surpassed this year's minimum target with 11.43 million arrivals until Oct. 1 and expressed optimism of reaching the maximum target of 14.3 million visitors by the year-end.
The tourism minister claims that Indonesian tourism will not suffer from the end of the visa-free facility for 159 countries because of the government’s paradigm shift to “quality tourism”, but an industry scholar disagrees.
The Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry has laid out its tourism targets for next year, but industry players have dismissed them as unambitious and say better public-private coordination is needed to support the sector in its ongoing recovery.
