View all search resultsPresident Prabowo Subianto has moved to give Indonesia’s future capital Nusantara greater certainty by issuing a regulation that will formally designate it as the country’s political center by 2028, his greater signal yet of commitment to the project, even as doubts persist over funding and timelines.
The President has approved a budget of Rp 48.8 trillion for legislative and judicial facilities, as well as for the construction of roads in and around Nusantara and for the maintenance of facilities already built there.
Outgoing President Joko ‘’Jokowi’’ Widodo has yet to sign a presidential decree that will effectively relocate Indonesia’s capital city to Nusantara, East Kalimantan. The Nusantara project may face a serious impediment as president-elect Prabowo Subianto will focus on his own priority programs, although on various occasions he has demonstrated a willingness to carry on the new capital city development.
The outgoing President claimed progress on Nusantara was going according to plan and that he had enjoyed an “abundant water supply, good electricity and internet connection” during his first stay at the residence in the form of mythical bird Garuda.
Several ministries and government bodies have requested larger budgets to facilitate their relocation to the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) next year, a President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo legacy project that has been hampered by delays, lack of investment and land acquisition problems.
