This has been so since its independence in 1945, yet Indonesianists never fail to raise the alarm on the rise of Islamism, particularly around elections. This year was no exception.
The Youth and Sports Ministry is raising the possibility for the female members of the national flag-hoisting team (Paskibraka) to wear trousers in place of the knee-long skirts to help them “move more easily”.
In an op-ed published in The New York Times (Feb. 14, 2019), renowned author Eka Kurniawan commented on the April 17 elections: “No matter who ends up being president, conservative Islamic groups, backed by radical groups, will win — have already won — the election.”
