T

he Youth and Sports Ministry is raising the possibility for the female members of the national flag-hoisting team (Paskibraka) to wear trousers in place of the knee-long skirts to help them “move more easily”.

The ministry’s youth development deputy Asrorun Niam Sholeh said on Saturday that the new rule would come into effect this year, particularly during the upcoming flag-raising ceremony on Aug. 17 to celebrate Indonesia’s 74th anniversary.

Asrorun further said the use of trousers could ease the female team members in exercising their duty, as wearing skirts was believed to be troublesome for them. He also argued that all pants were in line with the hijab worn by several team members.

“We have conducted at least two meetings before coming to such a decision. This regulation has apparently been applied in the police and military,” he said, as reported by Antara. The ministry had selected 68 Paskibraka members from the country’s 34 provinces for the Aug. 17 ceremony in the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta.

The team is undergoing training in the Youth Empowerment and National Sports Center (PPPON) complex in Cibubur, East Jakarta, for the flag-raising ceremony.
