The digital economy in Indonesia has undoubtedly boosted consumption, increased convenience and introduced consumers to a new way of living. Another change it has brought is in terms of productivity: creating new jobs, improving the lives of small and micro business entrepreneurs and making Indonesian society more productive.
The benefits of digitizing are abundant: Innovators with intelligent mining operations can raise margins by up to 20 percent. Technology advances can create more standardized processes — with consistently higher production levels — and improve worker safety.
Unlike downstream segments such as e-commerce, food delivery, or other consumer-facing platforms, there is unfortunately no unicorn company or clear example of how an ideal agritech company could be a sustainable business and profitable.
With investments in the right technologies and focus on providing the right customer experience, debt collection can be aligned to both lender and borrower needs — making the process intelligent, accessible, positive and engaging.
An incoming Jokowi government will need to focus on further development of digital infrastructure to help lift rural connectivity rates. Indonesia lags behind its neighbors on this front, only investing 1.3 percent of its GDP compared to Thailand’s 2.4 percent, Malaysia’s 4.5 percent and Singapore’s 6.6 percent.
