In Indonesia, Astaga!com — the symbol of the go-go dotcom pioneer — and its successor Mweb Indonesia faced a very tough and rough reality. In retrospect, the failure of Astaga!com and similar companies at that time in Indonesia is understandable.
Now, the for-profit model has collapsed, and newspapers have not been able to craft a digital response. Even in the smallest markets, Facebook and Google siphon three quarters of the digital revenue. That leaves all other legacy media fighting for the digital scraps. They're not enough to build strong journalism.
Two decades after Japan rolled out an ambitious plan to go digital, the COVID-19 crisis has exposed the government's deeply rooted technological shortcomings as ministries remain stuck in a paper-driven culture that experts say is hurting productivity.
