View all search resultsCivil society organizations are calling on the government to conduct a “total reevaluation” of the flagship free nutritious meal program in the wake of widespread food poisoning cases at schools across the country.
Taruna reported that, since the launch of the free meal program in January, BPOM has recorded 17 food poisoning incidents across 10 provinces. While he did not specify the number of students affected, various news reports indicate that at least 1,500 students have been impacted by these incidents.
A total of 171 students and teachers from nine schools in Bogor, West Java, reported symptoms of food poisoning, including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and fever, after consuming packaged meals consisting of sunny-side-up eggs, stir-fried tofu, bean sprouts and bananas. Subsequent investigations revealed that the eggs and stir-fried vegetables were contaminated with harmful E. coli and Salmonella bacteria.
Since the free meal program was launched in January, there have been at least 10 reported cases of mass food poisoning linked to it, impacting more than 1,000 students across various regions.
