lans to connect Darwin in Australia with Frans Kaisiepo Airport in Biak, Papua, have been revealed by state-run airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I (AP I) and the Association of Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (Asita) on Monday.

AP I general manager at Biak airport, Minggus GT Gundiguai, told Antara news agency that the new route was aimed at increasing travel from Australia to Biak airport. "We are hopeful that this cooperation can be realized, specifically with AirAsia," he said, adding that currently visitors traveling from Darwin wanted to visit Raja Ampat or other Papuan destinations but had to enter through Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. "If this new route exists, tourists going to Papua can directly fly from Darwin to Biak airport."

Minggus said all facilities in Biak airport were ready since the airport used to serve an international route between Honolulu in Hawaii, US, Biak and Jakarta in the 1980s.

National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia and private carrier Sriwijaya Air currently offer their services at Biak airport, including the Biak-Makassar-Jakarta and Biak-Nabire-Timika-Jayapura routes. (kes)
