laza Indonesia shopping mall in Central Jakarta has suspended operations following riots on Jl. MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday.
Tommy Utomo, marketing communication and public relations manager of Plaza Indonesia, told Antara that the mall had been closed since Wednesday at 2 p.m. for security reasons and would resume operations on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
He added that the mall's tenants had been informed about the closure.

The shopping mall was open on Wednesday, though with low visitor numbers, it closed early.
Meanwhile, Roy Mandey, chairman of the Indonesian Retailers Association (Aprindo), said Plaza Indonesia’s decision to suspend operations is part of the management’s procedure when events occur around the mall.

“All modern retailers and shopping centers will try to remain open to fulfill their customers’ needs, but [the decision to close down] depends on each of their procedures,” said Roy. “Activities in shopping centers and retailers will be adjusted to the current situation. The association doesn’t regulate that.”
Meanwhile, state-owned retailer Sarinah, located across the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) office, where riots took place, remained closed on Thursday, though it was not under tight security.
Meanwhile, unlike Plaza Indonesia, its neighbor Grand Indonesia shopping mall resumed operations on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. after closing down on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

“Yesterday, a lot of our tenants asked us to close earlier, so we decided to do so at 3 p.m.,” said Annisa Hazarini, a public relations officer for Grand Indonesia. “Considering the current situation, we decided to resume operations today.” (wir/kes)
