tate-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has implemented a new regulation regarding the type of bicycles that are allowed to be taken on the train.

Only folding bikes with a maximum weight of 20 kilograms and maximum wheel size of 22 inches are allowed on board the trains, which include interprovincial trains on Java island, the commuter line, airport trains and South Sumatra LRT.

Especially for commuter line trains, the folding bicycles should have a maximum dimension of 100 by 40 by 30 centimeters.

"It should be noted that bicycles should only be stored in passenger trains. It is not permitted to store them in the dining car or the connector between trains," said PT KAI public relations vice president Edy Kuswoyo in a statement as quoted by kompas.com.

Regarding the technical aspects of storage on trains, PT KAI requires the bikes to be folded and put inside a luggage compartment or empty space around each passenger seat to ensure the safety of the trip as well as the bike itself.

Those needing to bring larger bicycles can opt to use the company's freight transportation service PT KA Logistik or KALOG, which offers bicycle delivery service to destinations across Java and Bali. It also serves door-to-door delivery service in addition to station-to-station. (ran/kes)
