The launches came just days after the North said it had tested a new long-range cruise missile, raising fresh alarm in Japan and other countries, including the United States, which has tens of thousands of troops stationed across Japan.
orth Korea fired two ballistic missiles into waters off its east coast on Wednesday, the first such launches in nearly six months, Japanese and South Korean authorities said.
The launches came just days after the North said it had tested a new long-range cruise missile, raising fresh alarm in Japan and other countries, including the United States, which has tens of thousands of troops stationed across Japan.
The projectiles did not enter Japanese territory, Japan's Defense Ministry said, quoted by Kyodo News. They are also believed to have landed outside Japan's exclusive economic zone, the country's coast guard said.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the two short-range ballistic missiles were launched from South Pyongan Province in a central area of North Korea toward the east coast, and flew around 800 kilometers after reaching an altitude of about 60 km.
Japanese and South Korean authorities said the missiles were fired successively shortly after 12:30 p.m.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said at a press conference that the missiles may have flown "in an anomalous manner," without elaborating.
North Korea had warned of retaliation after the United States and South Korea went ahead with a joint military exercise in August despite its protest.
