The Indonesian Embassy in Paris has advised all Indonesians in France to reach out to the embassy's hotline should they need any assistance amid the unrest sparked by the recent fatal police shooting of a teenager in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.
ll Indonesian citizens living in France are safe amid the unrest triggered by the fatal police shooting of a teenager, the Indonesian Embassy in Paris has confirmed.
“Thank God, no member of the Indonesian diaspora in Paris has fallen victim to the unrest,” said Indonesian Ambassador to France Mohamad Oemar in an interview with national radio broadcaster RRI on Saturday. He advised Indonesian citizens to call the embassy’s hotline should they be affected by the unrest.
The ambassador added that the embassy would keep in touch with Indonesian people in France, especially those residing in and around Paris. There are more than 6,000 Indonesian citizens currently living in France, according to the ambassador, with around 1,000 living in and near the capital.
The unrest broke out after a police officer shot Nahel M., a 17-year-old of Algerian and Moroccan parents, during a traffic stop on Tuesday in the Paris suburb of Nanterre. Nahel's funeral ceremony was held on Saturday in Nanterre, where he lived, with hundreds gathering peacefully along with his mother and grandmother.
On Sunday, China’s Consulate General in Marseille complained to France about threats to the safety of Chinese citizens and their property, Reuters reported. The formal complaint was filed following an attack on Thursday on a bus carrying a Chinese tour group in the southern French city. The bus had its windows smashed, leading to minor injuries, according to a statement from China’s Consular Affairs Office.
The Chinese tourists have since left France, the statement said.
Chinese citizens in France or heading to France should "strengthen prevention" and be "more vigilant and cautious" in light of the riots which have swept across the country in recent days, the Consular Office statement added.
