ndonesia is preparing to send humanitarian relief to Libya after the massive flooding on Sept. 11 that devastated the eastern part of the country, killed thousands and displaced tens of thousands of others, a senior minister has announced.

Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy said on Friday that the government would send logistical and technical aid to Libya in response to a request from the North African country.

“We have had diplomatic relations since 1991. We also have a close relationship with the government of Libya and the Libyan people,” Muhadjir said in a statement on Friday, after a coordination meeting on the assistance in Jakarta.

Jakarta was still waiting for the Libyan government to send a list of materials it needed before sending the aid, while the Indonesian embassy in Tripoli was finalizing its survey of items needed by the people on the ground.

“We will send what is really needed there,” Muhadjir added.

Storm Daniel passed through the Mediterranean Sea from Sept. 9 to 10, dumping record amounts of rainfall onto a normally dry riverbed in the hills south of Derna, a coastal city in eastern Libya.

The sudden deluge overwhelmed the two dams built to protect the city from flooding, causing their collapse to unleash a torrent through the city, Reuters reported.
