P

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo left on Thursday for Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, to attend the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).

Jokowi departed on the presidential Boeing 737 aircraft from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta. The conference takes place from Thursday to Dec. 12.

“At the COP28 summit, I will convey Indonesia’s experience and emphasize the importance of global collaboration for climate finance, as well as the importance of an inclusive transition to ensure sustainable development and social welfare in developing countries,” the President said in an official press release.

One of COP28’s primary objectives is evaluating progress toward achieving targets set in the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Countries will evaluate global climate progress and update national emissions-cutting targets.

“The world has high hopes for COP28 so that there will be real global action to limit the rising world temperature,” Jokowi said.

There will also be discussions on reducing the use of fossil fuels. At COP26 in Glasgow, countries agreed to reduce coal use. For this year’s conference, countries will discuss reductions in oil and gas use in addition to coal.

The climate talk will emphasize technologies to capture and store carbon dioxide emissions, which some countries worry will be used to justify ongoing fossil fuel use.
