ndonesian Navy hospital ship KRI Dr. Radjiman Wedyodiningrat arrived at the El Arish port in Egypt on Tuesday, carrying humanitarian aid for the Palestinian refugees fleeing Israeli bombardment in the border town of Rafah in the Gaza Strip.
The ship was welcomed by Indonesian Embassy in Cairo deputy chief of mission M. Zaim A. Nasution, Indonesian Defense Attache Col. Aria Sanggita Saleh, Egyptian Red Cross (ERC) representative Buhaeri Ali as well as embassy staff, port authority workers and shipping agents, the Indonesian Navy said in a press release on Tuesday.
Sailing under the Egypt Goodwill/Port Call 2024 mission, the Dr. Radjiman Wedyodiningrat was scheduled to dock at the Egyptian port of El Arish on Friday, but because of the general election in Egypt, the arrival was postponed to Wednesday.
The Indonesian public has been generous in donating goods to humanitarian aid posts established by the Indonesian Navy in Jakarta and Surabaya. The aid includes food and beverages, clothing, feminine hygiene products and products for children and babies.
The humanitarian aid was handed over to the ERC representative to be delivered overland to Rafah.
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been under Israeli bombardment since the Oct. 7 surprise attack on Israel by the Hamas resistance group.
The Israeli military started bombing Rafah on Monday, where about 1.5 million people are taking refuge from previous attacks in the northern part of the Gaza Strip. (nvn)
