TNI commander Gen. Agus Subiyanto said the brigade would include a support battalion, a health battalion, an engineering battalion and a supply battalion and would total 1,212 personnel.
he Indonesian Military (TNI) has announced that it is forming a composite brigade consisting of four battalions for potential deployment to Gaza, Palestine, in anticipation of a United Nations mandate for peacekeeping operations in the conflict-stricken region.
TNI commander Gen. Agus Subiyanto said the brigade would include a support battalion, a health battalion, an engineering battalion and a supply battalion and would total 1,212 personnel.
"After we receive a mandate from the UN or a plan to evacuate civilian victims, we can send a field hospital or evacuate the victims and bring them to Indonesia," he said after a working meeting with House of Representatives Commission I on Thursday, as reported by CNN Indonesia.
The health battalion is equipped with medical equipment and staffed by doctors and other medical workers; the engineering battalion specializes in construction; the supply battalion can provide public kitchens; and the support battalion seeks to ensure the security of deployed personnel.
In addition to the brigade, the TNI is preparing two hospital ships, KRI Dr. Rajiman Wedyodiningrat and KRI Dr. Suharso. Both hospital ships have emergency units capable of performing advanced surgeries, with x-ray facilities and emergency rooms.
KRI Radjiman’s health facility has a capacity of 160 patients, while KRI Soeharso has a capacity of 40 patients and can carry 500 troops.
Earlier in February, KRI Rajiman embarked on a goodwill mission to El Arish port in Egypt carrying humanitarian aid for the Palestinians besieged in the Gaza Strip.
