As Malaysia prepares for its upcoming ASEAN chairmanship, regional issues, especially the Myanmar crisis, were also highlighted as the bloc continues to struggle in implementing its peace-led mechanism in the conflict-torn country.
The Indonesia-Malaysia Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) is an annual forum to discuss key issues between the neighboring countries. Indonesia will host the meeting this year.
During Retno’s visit to Putrajaya, maritime border negotiations took center stage, with the intertidal and gap area of the Sulawesi Sea particularly of concern.
“Strengthened commitment is needed for the negotiations to reach a good resolution that is mutually beneficial for both parties,” Retno said in a statement after her meeting.
