ingaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong embarked on his two-day state visit to Indonesia on Tuesday in a move described by international experts as “strategic” given the archipelago’s importance to the island country and Indonesia’s projected bigger role on the global stage under the leadership of new President Prabowo Subianto.
Widely perceived as a more foreign policy-oriented leader than his predecessor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Prabowo has been trying to engage more with Indonesia’s partners and bring Jakarta closer to its neighbors in the Asia Pacific region as well as global superpowers by conducting a whirlwind of foreign trips after his election victory earlier this year.
Prabowo is further planning to embark on an expansive two-week overseas trip starting on Friday with an itinerary that includes China, the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and Group of 20 summits in South America.
Speaking to a small group of reporters upon his arrival from Singapore on Monday, Prime Minister Wong said he was looking forward to "writing a new chapter of our bilateral ties".
"This is my third visit in a year. It shows the importance that we attach to the relationship and the bilateral ties, which are very strong," he said in the joint interview.
Wong noted that Prabowo has deep connections with Singapore, and that he was "very happy" to be back so soon after his inauguration. It was his third visit to Indonesia in a year, and "the first official visitor" for the Indonesian leader, he claimed.
