s the world grapples with a failing multilateral system, and as seemingly never-ending crises continue to cause instability across the globe, Indonesia will practice a “bolder” free and active foreign policy to ensure its self-sufficiency and uphold ASEAN centrality, Foreign Minister Sugiono asserted during his first annual speech on Friday.

Diplomatic missions for the year ahead will revolve around achieving Jakarta’s economic goals including realizing GDP growth of 8 percent, he added, also referring to President Prabowo Subianto’s eight-point priority program, Asta Cita, as the Foreign Ministry’s strategic foundations.

“Under President Prabowo’s leadership, Indonesia will put itself on the global stage in line with its stature as a great nation, as well as a trusted partner and as a good neighbor,” Sugiono told dozens of ambassadors, diplomats and the press in Central Jakarta.

“Our diplomacy will not be merely responsive to crises, but must also become anticipatory, progressive and visionary. [...] Diplomacy that is based on the values of our nation as contained in [the country’s ideology of] Pancasila, with Asta Cita as its strategic guidelines,” he continued.

In a much-awaited address, the country’s top envoy outlined over 60 minutes the priorities of the country’s diplomatic focus under Prabowo’s new government, an administration that has so far been relentless in establishing itself as an active global player.
