A joint statement following President Prabowo’s meeting with Xi Jinping threatens to upend Jakarta’s neutral stance by suggesting the two countries “reached an important common understanding on joint development in areas of overlapping claims”.

Chief of Bakamla Vice Adm. Irvansyah told lawmakers at the House of Representatives on Monday that the meeting was scheduled for late November or early December this year.

Beijing has long clashed with Southeast Asian neighbours over the South China Sea, which it claims almost in its entirety, based on a "nine-dash line" on its maps that cuts into the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of several countries. 

The Keris Woomera Exercise is the largest combined joint activities by the two countries' military under the Australia-Indonesia Defence Cooperation Agreement. 

The joint exercise, which started last week, came as newly inaugurated President Prabowo Subianto pledged closer ties with Russia on defence, in a bid to forge links with any country as part of Jakarta's long-held non-aligned foreign policy.

On Saturday, Prabowo met Chinese President Xi Jinping, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

President Prabowo Subianto ended his state visit to China on Sunday and left directly for the United States as his administration seeks to maintain balanced ties with the two rival powers.

The Qantas flight, QF520, was bound for Brisbane and was circling for a "short period of time" before landing safely at Sydney Airport, Qantas Chief Pilot Captain Richard Tobiano said in the statement.

Prabowo, a 73-year-old ex-general inaugurated last month, has pledged to position Jakarta more prominently on the world stage while sticking to its traditional non-aligned foreign policy.

Asked about the prospect of a NATO equivalent in Southeast Asia, Gilberto Teodoro told a security forum that ASEAN's complex "dichotomies and divergence in country interests" would make it challenging to set up a unified military alliance."For example, we have a pre-ASEAN defense alliance with the United States. We continue to build alliances with like-minded countries," he said in a security forum in Manila. 

The 73-year-old ex-general's state visit will take place from Friday to Sunday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said in a statement.

The firm, which also owns Instagram, ran afoul of laws prohibiting the use of information on political opinions, religious beliefs and people's sex life unless the individual provides explicit consent, Seoul's Personal Information Protection Commission added.

The move brings to light another of the multiple disputes in the strategic waterway, most of which China claims sovereignty over, with Beijing involved in frequent altercations with the Philippines and sporadic rows with Vietnam.

Since the coup Myanmar has been in chaos, including areas along its border with China, as an armed resistance movement combined with established ethnic minority militias to wrest control of large territories from the military government.
