Iran effectively closed the vital sea route, a corridor that carries a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows, in response to US and Israeli airstrikes that began in late February.

Calls are mounting for a thorough review of Indonesia’s peacekeeping deployment to Lebanon following last week’s fatal incidents, with some urging a full suspension of the mission as ongoing Israeli attacks continue to claim lives and heighten risks for troops on the ground. 

In a statement, UNIFIL said it was "extremely concerned" about attacks from both sides "carried out from near our positions, which could potentially draw return fire".

Reuters could not immediately verify the report. The White House and the US State Department did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. 

The Indonesian Military (TNI) is open to the possibility of reducing the number of peacekeepers deployed to Lebanon next month, as more Indonesian blue helmets were injured in the southern part of the country amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

The statement came after US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the officer had been rescued in a search and rescue operation and was "SAFE and SOUND".

The two countries outlined a joint initiative "for restoring peace and stability in the Gulf and Middle East region", after a visit from senior Pakistani officials to Beijing.

The two peacekeepers with the UNIFIL force were killed on Monday near Bani Hayyan in south Lebanon and two other soldiers were wounded. Another Indonesian soldier was killed overnight Sunday into Monday when a projectile exploded near one of the group's positions.

Two other Indonesian UNIFIL were killed in southern Lebanon on Monday, one day after another peacekeeper died in an explosion amid the intensifying Israeli ground invasion.

The critical waterway has effectively been shut since the US-Israeli war with Iran began on February 28.

Vatican second-in-command Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and its top diplomat, Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, met with ambassador Yaron Sideman and "regrets were expressed regarding this incident, concerning which clarifications were provided," the Vatican said.

"The safety of peacekeeping troops must be the top priority. All parties to the conflict are urged to respect international humanitarian law and ensure the security of peacekeeping personnel," Defense Ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Rico Ricardo Sirait said in a statement.
