Hair and beauty trends to steal from New York Fashion Week Bobbi Brown Backstage - Marchesa NYFW 2016 (Heidi Nazarudin/Crystal Phuong)

S

ure, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But at NYFW this fall, we beheld so much beauty that it was hard to pin down the trends.

At Jason Wu’s show, some of the models had drawn-on freckles. I don’t know if that’s going to take-off, and I’m not sure it’s worth the time and effort considering that most of us have spent years trying to cover freckles up.

Speaking of natural, that’s Bobbi Brown’s strong suit and she once again didn’t disappoint. Eye gloss was seen on the Jenny Packham and Marchesa models. Bobbi Brown’s eye gloss won’t be available for another few months, but it’s worth waiting for and lining up to get this new tool. Don’t worry; it’s not goopy and your eyelids won’t stick to themselves. This product simply leaves a glorious sheen, adding a youthful glow and makes for a more natural look.

For Georgine’s show, Brown kept the only color on the face, the lip, which was a red-orange that served as practically the only pop of color on the stage since the majority of Georgine’s collection was shades of grey, black and beige. With a few yellow (and the same red-orange) pieces mixed in. Yet at all these shows, Bobbi Brown kept the basic face natural. Simple concealer followed by a dusting of powder was the order of the day. Finished off with her amazing, and universally wearable, highlighting powder, there was a youthful and fresh appearance to all the models. OK, sure, they’re all pretty youthful to begin with, but at least Bobbi Brown’s makeup didn’t age them inappropriately, as can happen when too much makeup is applied.

So while Bobbi Brown was keeping it real, hair styles seemed to be the place where the biggest trends were happening. For example:

- Heavily teased hair instead of sleek, blow-outs.

- Long hair tucked into the collar.

- The ballet bun on all the models at both the Sachin & Babi and Novis events.

- Natural.

Aveda also embraced the minimalist, natural approach in hairstyles in a number of shows at NYFW. At the Tome presentation, models seemed to have been styled to embrace their tresses’ natural proclivities. Wavy hair, ringlets, afros and straight hair were center stage.  While at Tibi, hair was tied back in ponytails, or straight down, or in casual buns, such as this one that I tried to capture on film to copy at a later date.

While Bobbi Brown was showing us the natural trends on faces, and Aveda was inspiring us with new twists on everyday hairstyles, the best part of studying the hair and makeup trends at Fashion Week was that it was all doable and affordable, even when a lot of the couture fashion pieces are not. I can tuck my hair into my jacket and call myself cutting-edge. Give me time and I will be able to do a ballet bun. Less than US$50 gets me Bobbi Brown’s highlighting powder. See -- doable! I’m just not as certain I can pull off the beautiful Claudia Li red bralette.
