ne of the most legendary fictional couples in Indonesia has marked their return to the silver screen. Inspired by the classic novel and renowned 1979 film Gita Cinta dari SMA (Love Song in High School), Galih & Ratna will be screened across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei starting on March 9.
Galih & Ratna narrates a love story between an introverted senior high school student Galih and a new student Ratna. Both of them have problems that seem related to each other. Galih, for example, is still grieving his father’s death and his passion for music is not supported by his mother. Meanwhile, Ratna often feels that she is talentless. She likes to write songs in her spare time, but her father does not support her.
Following their first meeting, Ratna is interested in the song Galih listened to through his Walkman. Sparks fly and the rest is history.

Directed by Lucky Kuswandi, this remake of Gita Cinta dari SMA stars newcomer actors, Refal Hady and Sheryl Sheinafia. Several notable actors in the Indonesian film industry are also included in the movie, such as Joko Anwar, Ayu Dyah Pasha, Hengky Tornando and Marissa Anita. Furthermore, there will be special appearances by Rano Karno and Yessy Gusman, both who portrayed Galih and Ratna, respectively, in the 1979 film.
"Galih & Ratna is about transition [phases] in life, about two teenagers who are not ready to enter adulthood,” said Lucky Kuswandi in a press release. “But they’re expected to grow up fast without consideration for what they actually want. They just have each other and they silently support one another to pursue their dreams.”
Prior the film premiere, audiences may delve into the lives of the modern Galih and Ratna via its soundtrack or by attending the “JOOX Galih & Ratna Music Concert” on Feb. 24. Several renowned names in the music industry will perform at the event, including the Gamaliel Audrey Cantika (GAC) trio, Sherly Sheinafia, Rendy Pandugo, Sore, White Shoes & The Couples Company, Ivan Gojaya and Agustin Oendary.
