wners of athletic shoes are usually warned to replace their exercise footwear often, with the caution that if they don’t injuries could occur.
Aside from keeping aware of the mileage estimates, we also have to keep in mind that exercising habits vary between individuals. Environmental factors and each person’s weight also play a part, along with different types of shoes.
Running shoes and mileage
Reebok footwear running and training director Ted Fitzpatrick told Esquire that running shoes should be replaced when they start to have less response upon contact and show noticeable wear.
Nike spokesman Gavin Thomas put running shoe mileage at 550-650 kilometers. Meanwhile, Brooks spokeswoman Kira Harrison put the mileage at 500 km for lightweight shoes and 650-800 km for others.
There’s some dispute over running shoe mileages. Competitive coach Kyle Kranz says he keeps using running shoes until they wear through the bottom or fall apart, with him usually getting 1,200-2,400 km per pair. Golden Harper, founder of the Altra running shoe company, and a former distance runner, states that mileages are “a lot of malarkey”.

Lifters and their shoes
Since weightlifting shoes are worn less frequently than other sneakers, they’re going to be usable for longer and show less external wear. Joe Nguyen, senior merchandizer at Asics, states that if their cushioning is off and does not give the same feel, it is time to switch. The upper part of weightlifting shoes will lose some rigidity even if the soles may not see significant wear.
Weary training shoes
Training shoes, like running shoes, will show noticeable wear. Fraying and ripping can emerge since some training involves many lateral movements, and it is time for a new pair when the inner materials are visible.
Brick New York coach Ben Sweeney advises alternating pairs if workouts are frequent. (dan/kes)
