ctress Marsha Timothy has been recognized as Best Actress at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, held in Barcelona, Spain on Oct. 5-15, for her role in Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts.

Among the nominees in the Best Actress category were Nicole Kidman, Masami Nagasawa and Monika Balsai. Previous winners of the award include Julianne Moore, Lee Young-ae, Reese Witherspoon and Bridget Fonda.

“It is an honor to receive this award,” Marsha said in a press release. “I never thought that my role as Marlina would receive the recognition of judges of such an important festival like Sitges.”

In Mouly Surya's Marlina, Marsha portrays a young widow who decapitates the men who rob her.

Up to 34 movies competed at the festival, including Takashi Miike’s Blade of the Immortal, Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Before We Vanish and Kornél Mundruczó’s Jupiter’s Moon.

Marlina had already received Special Mention in the Focus Àsia category. The film was also screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May, the Melbourne International Film Festival in August and the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Indonesian audiences can expect to see Marlina at local cinemas starting Nov. 16.

Established in 1968, Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia specializes in fantasy, sci-fi, horror and thriller films. Many celebrated figures within the film industry have participated in the festival, including Quentin Tarantino, Viggo Mortensen, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster and Guillermo de Toro. (kes)
