he Jakarta administration is set to build two Intermediate Waste Treatment Facilities (ITFs) in Sunter and Marunda, both in North Jakarta, this year to reduce the city’s over-reliance on its trash dump in Bantar Gebang, Bekasi, West Java, an official has said.
Jakarta Sanitation Agency head Isnawa Adji said in the ITFs, waste would be processed into electricity. “We held a tender process for the construction of the treatment facilities in Sunter and Marunda. The construction process is expected to be finished in 2018,” Isnawa told The Jakarta Post on Friday. He said incinerators also would be used to treat the city’s garbage.
The waste treatment facilities in Sunter and Marunda have the capacity to process 1,500 tons of waste per day and will generate around 14 megawatts of electricity. Meanwhile, waste residue can be used as mixture material for the manufacture of asphalt, brick and paving blocks.
The ITF was initiated by former Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo but the slow bidding process delayed its construction for years. (rez/ebf)
