eneral Elections Commission (KPU) offices in Landak regency and Singkawang city in West Kalimantan are set to distribute ballots for regional elections in the two areas, where remote areas will be prioritized.

KPU Landak head Lomon said the commission had mapped out areas with high geographical challenges prior to the distribution of the election material.

“Four out of 13 districts in Landak are located in hinterlands and it remains difficult to access transportation in those areas, especially if it rains. Some of the areas can only be reached by the river,” said Lomon. As many as 1,006 polling stations are being prepared for the election in the regency, he added.

It takes around four-and-a-half hours by car to get to Landak’s capital,  Ngabang, which is around 183 kilometers from Pontianak, the provincial capital of West Kalimantan.

The four districts with geographical challenges are Air Besar, Kuala Behe, Merantik and Sebangki. Because of the access difficulties, it is likely officers distributing election logistics will need to stop and stay overnight in the area.

Meanwhile, the distribution of election material in Singkawang city is not facing significant obstacles. KPU Singkawang head Ramdan said as an urban area with only five districts, it was quite easy to reach polling stations in Singkawang.

Located around 151-km from Pontianak, Singkawang can be reached in around three-and-a-half hours by car from the capital.

“The folding process of the ballots has finished. We are sorting them and later will pack the ballots before we distribute them. Alhamdulillah [Thank God], distribution points are easy to reach,” said Ramdan. (ebf)
