ational Police spokesperson Insp.Gen. Boy Rafli Amar has said the police are checking the validity of rumors that Bahrumsyah, an Islamic State (IS) group fighter from Indonesia, has been killed in Syria.

Bahrumsyah had reportedly lived in Syria for the last several years taking part in the activities of the extremist group.

“We don’t yet dare to say, yes, it’s true; but, the information is there,” said Boy as quoted by kompas.com in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He said the police were hoping to get confirmation from authorities in Syria and had asked the Foreign Ministry to bridge communications with the local authorities.

“This is information we need to confirm properly because it happened abroad,” said Boy. “We are still waiting for clarification from relevant authorities. So we want to first get valid data.”

Bahrumsyah was reportedly killed in Syria prior to launching a terror attack with his group. He appeared in a video showing activities conducted by IS in August 2014.

Bahrumsyah pursued higher education at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta. He reportedly joined IS in 2014.

Three Indonesian citizens have reportedly joined IS in Syria. They are Bahrumsyah, Bahrun Naim and Salim Mubarok alias Abu Jandal. They followed the example of the leader of Tawhid Waljihad or Jamaah Ansharut Daulad (JAD), Aman Abdurrahman, who is serving time on Nusakambangan prison island.  (ebf)
