he government has invited coffee buyers from Canada to Takengon in Central Aceh to take a close look on the production process of Gayo coffee, a specialty coffee only grown in the area.
Five Canadian buyers are staying in the province from Nov. 13 to 17 to meet representatives of coffee producers, including PT Meukat Komoditi Gayo, PT Orang Utan Lestari, Redelong Organic Cooperatives, Kopi Wanita Gayo (Kokowa Gayo) Cooperatives and Arinagata cooperatives.
The Trade Ministry’s export product development director, Sulistyawati, said the visit, organized by the ministry in cooperation with Canada’s Trade and Private Sector Assistance (TPSA), was scheduled to introduce a variety of types of Gayo coffee to the buyers.
Read also: Coffee exports to South Korea grow 53.01 percent“The event is to promote the specialty coffee. Indonesia has 16 kinds of specialty coffee grown in many parts of the country,” said Sulistyawati in a statement received by The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
The Canadian delegates represent Bean North Coffee Roasting, Cooperative Coffee, Just Us Coffee Roaster Cooperative, Los Beans and Lenoir & Lacroix.
Among the events scheduled are a coffee tasting, a meeting with the coffee producers and a tour of the entire coffee-making process, from the planting stage to the production of high-quality coffee beans. Last year, coffee exports to Canada were a recorded US$21.5 million, while from January to August this year, coffee exports to the country reached $18.4 million. (bbn)
