he Mandalika Grand Mosque in West Nusa Tenggara is currently under construction and slated for opening prior to Idul Adha (the Islamic Day of Sacrifice) that falls on Sept. 1.
“This is the second biggest mosque after the Islamic Center in Lombok. The road to the mosque is currently being paved with asphalt and the steel roof has been installed. It will be opened before the Idul Adha celebration,” explained the Tourism Ministry's head of development acceleration for priority tourist destinations, Hiramsyah S. Thaib.
“The mosque is being built on a five-hectare plot of land and will be able to accommodate 1,500 people inside the building and 500 more on the terrace,” Hiramsyah added.

Adorned in Islamic ornaments and calligraphy, the design of the grand mosque was inspired by the Bayan Mosque in North Lombok and the region's traditional buildings in Sembalun, East Lombok.
“The building is eco-friendly as it relies on natural light from the sun and natural ventilation,” he added.
The mosque will also host an education center, a multi-function hall, restrooms and a wudhu (ritual ablutions) facility. (kes)
