bud area in Bali will be filled by jazz enthusiasts from Aug. 11 to 12 as Ubud Village Jazz Festival (UVJF) is set to be held at the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) Museum.

The festival’s lineup will feature international and local musicians, such as Grammy-nominated Gerald Clayton Trio who will perform together with bassist Joe Sanders and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. Clayton, who earned the second spot at the Piano Jazz Thelonious Monk Institute in 2006, scored a Grammy nomination in 2010 in best improvized jazz solo category for his arrangement of Cole Porter’s “All of You.”
Moreover, his composition with The Clayton Brothers titled “Battle Circle” was nominated at the 2011 Grammys for best jazz instrumental composition category. His second and third album called “Bond: The Paris Session (Concord)” and “Life Forum (Concord)” were also nominated in the best jazz instrumental album at the 2012 and 2013 Grammys, respectively.
“Meanwhile Joe Sanders is one of the most wanted young bassists in his generation. Sanders was recently named runner up at the finale of International Society of Bassists Jazz Bass Competition and Thelonious Monk Institute’s Internasional Jazz Bass Competition,” explained the festival’s co-founder Yuri Mahatma.
This year’s UVJF is also supported by the Australian Embassy who will bring Sydney-based pianist, organist, composer and improviser Steve Barry Quartet, the winner of Bell Award 2013 for young artist jazz Australia of the year and the runner-up at the National Awards Jazz 2013.
Insititut Francaise Indonesia (IFI) will bring French modern-jazz group called Samy Thiebault Trio, while the Embassy of Austria will present b.good Vogel duo consisting of Marc Vogel and Lukas Schiemer who are famous for combining modern jazz with popular groove music.
There will also be Glen Buschmann Jazz Academy Big Band consisting of 22 musicians from Germany.
Meanwhile, local musicians set to grace the festival’s stage are guitarist I Wayan Balawan and musician Benny Likumahuwa who will perform with his son, singer Barry Likumahuwa. (kes)
