ignitaries from all over the world are expected to gather in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Dec. 10 and 11 to witness the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. A truly historic milestone for the Global Compact is the first document on global migration ever concluded under the auspices of the United Nations.

The adoption would cap a global process that was formally started by the adoption of “The New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants” in 2016. The subsequent processes saw the convening of various regional consultations, followed by inter-governmental negotiations in New York in 2018.

Indonesia has actively participated in all stages of the Global Compact’s preparation. Several solid reasons exist for why the Global Compact is critical for Indonesia and why all UN member states must support it.

First, global migration is arguably one of the most pressing issues for the international community. According to the UN, more than 250 million people migrated globally in 2017, encompassing migrant workers, asylum seekers and people fleeing war, persecution, or extreme poverty. Managing global migration thus demands a global approach and multi-sectoral collaboration.
