Google search with the keywords “Indonesia” and “safety” often brings up articles about travel and safety that unfortunately do not spark enthusiasm for travel to the country. The articles typically highlight the dangers one is likely to encounter, including traffic accidents, food poisoning and drowning.
With tourism being one of the main growth drivers for Indonesia, the nation must pay more attention and improve the perception of its overall safety standards.
However, despite the many news articles that cite safety issues within Indonesia, over the past few years, the country has maintained a safety level index that is above the global average.
According to a report by Underwriters Laboratories, Indonesia has maintained a score of 64 on a scale of zero to 100, with 100 being the best on the index for the past seven years. The Index does not measure intentional injury in relation to crime, terrorism, war and suicide.
