o provide Indonesian children and teens with an amazing opportunity and experience with one of the most recognised football clubs in the world, Manchester City Football Club (MCFC) and British School Jakarta (BSJ) agreed to collaborate on opening the first Manchester City Football School in the country.

On June 30, 2021, MCFC and BSJ launched the Manchester City Football School, the first of its kind in Indonesia. The official opening of the football school for BSJ students is set for September 2021, with the programmes planned for expansion to the wider community in 2022.

Manchester City Football School will provide authentic and creative football coaching programmes for students, utilising the coaching philosophy and methodology of Manchester City, BSJ said in a statement.

Based at BSJ in South Tangerang, Banten, on the southwestern outskirts of Jakarta, the Football School includes a Manchester City coaching team that will utilise BSJ’s first-class facilities, including both natural and 4G pitches, indoor alternatives and conditioning facilities.

Jorgina Busquets, Managing Director Football Education & Recreation at City Football Group in London, the United Kingdom, said: “It is a pleasure to be opening our first Manchester City Football School in Indonesia with British School Jakarta. BSJ stood out to us from the beginning because of their relentless pursuit of quality and focus on providing the highest well-rounded education for their students.”

“We look forward to contributing to it by providing an authentic and inclusive experience at the Manchester City Football School, where all programmes will follow the same philosophy that we use in Manchester to develop our own players,” she added.

BSJ principal David Butcher expressed his enthusiasm for the new collaboration with Manchester City.

“It is with great pride and excitement that we can announce and launch our partnership with Manchester City Football Club and open the first Manchester City Football School in Indonesia," he said.

"Our campus has superb sporting facilities and the Manchester City Football School will have a tremendous impact on the learning and development of our students across all age ranges and abilities,” Butcher continued.

“This is a great fillip for our community, and I have no doubt that this long-term partnership will flourish in the years to come. It is very much a case of paving the way for BSJ as we are totally focused on being a school for today and tomorrow.”

An English Premier League football club, Manchester City FC has a long history that stands out in the European football scene and is popular among international football enthusiasts, with many devoted fans in Indonesia.

Initially founded in 1880 as St Mark’s West Gorton, the club officially changed its name to Manchester City FC in 1894 and has since gone on to win the European Cup Winners’ Cup and seven League Championship titles, including five Premier League titles in 2012, 2014, 2018, 2019 and 2021. It has also won six Football Association Challenge (FA) Cups.

Manchester City is one of 10 clubs comprising the City Football Group and counts New York City FC and Melbourne City FC among its sister clubs.

Under manager Pep Guardiola, the club plays its domestic and UEFA Champions League home fixtures at Etihad Stadium in Manchester, a spectacular 55,000-seat arena that City have called home since 2003.

Today, the stadium sits on the wider Etihad Campus which encompasses the City Football Academy, a state-of-the-art performance training and youth development facility located in the heart of East Manchester.

Meanwhile, with its 44-acre campus in Bintaro, South Tangerang, BSJ is well recognized for providing world-class, bespoke education in the classroom and in facilities that include a 750-seat theatre as well as sports, music and language centres.

BSJ is an independent collaborative education unit (SPK) managed by the British School Jakarta Foundation, previously known as the British International School Foundation, established in 1974 under the auspices of the British Embassy Jakarta. Two decades later in 1994, BSJ relocated from its original site in Permata Hijau, South Jakarta, to Bintaro.

BSJ offers the best education with a strong international perspective to children aged 3 to 18. Founded primarily to teach British and Commonwealth nationals, today it serves a diverse community of approximately 1,200 students with an academic curriculum driven by inquiry and knowledge.

The BSJ Primary curriculum offers the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and components of the English National Curriculum (ENC), with students advancing to the IB MYP, I/GCSE, and IB DP or IB CP.

BSJ is an overseas member school of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC), an Apple Distinguished School and a member of the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA), and is accredited by the Council of International School (CIS)/Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The school also works closely with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and their Compassionate Systems wellbeing framework.

BSJ has recorded another curricular milestone with its recent announcement that starting in Academic Year 2021-2022, the Man City Playbook will be applied to its Physical Education (PE) / Physical and Health Education (PHE) curriculum.

This includes its football programmes, and BSJ football teams will be coached on how to play the Man City way.

“We will also have a Manchester City football coach as part of BSJ full-time teaching staff in a role [that includes] teaching across the school with the school’s teachers, coaching and training its teachers, and coaching and overseeing the Manchester City Football School,” Butcher added.
