fter more than a year cooped up at home, it is only natural that people, especially families, would like a change of pace to break up the pandemic blues.
While the spread of COVID-19 in Indonesia is seemingly declining, it is of utmost importance to stick to stringent health protocols to avoid catching the virus during one’s travels.
Unfortunately, that leaves some modes of transportation out of the question, especially for families with an eye for hygiene and well-being. Attaining this peace of mind is crucial for a sorely needed vacation, and most of the time the only way to be sure is to use one’s own vehicle.
Making the trip by car is likely one of the ideal solutions for many families. Even so, it is important that the car itself is a good fit for the journey. For example, picnic enthusiasts might prefer one with a large cargo space for all their meals, while those planning to go on longer trips will likely opt for increased comfort, safety and efficiency.
A good indicator that a car is perfect for a family is when it can do all they ask of it, and then some. Finding such a complete package can be hard at times, but Mercedes-Benz’s latest compact SUV, the new GLA 200 AMG Line, fits the bill quite easily.
Compact it may be, but the GLA is certainly bigger on the inside. At 4.43 meters in length, the GLA is agile in zipping around the city, but its 2.73 meter wheelbase ensures that five people can sit in constant comfort with ample headroom and legroom.
Cargo space is also uncompromised, with 435 liters of cargo capacity, which can be further expanded to 1,430 liters with the rear seats folded flat. Adding to the convenience is the power- operated EASY-PACK tailgate, which allows easy closing and opening with the push of a button.
Comfort is paramount in a family car, and the GLA 200 AMG Line keeps this in mind with power front seats with memory function and 4-way lumbar support, allowing both driver and front passenger to sit in the lap of luxury. Around the cabin, the standard Ambient Lighting provides extra mood lighting for every occasion, while offering extra convenience during nighttime drives.
Clearly, being inside the GLA is a most enjoyable experience. The dual 10.25-inch widescreen display allows for easy reading of the vehicle metrics, while the built-in digital assistant Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) can cater to its occupants’ whims, from adjusting the temperature, tuning into a favorite radio station, to finding the best route for the drive, all done with the simple phrase of “Hey Mercedes”.
Outside, the GLA 200 AMG Line looks as smart as it is. The AMG body styling offers a hint of sportiness to a rugged, SUV-esque silhouette. Meanwhile, a higher ground clearance lends the GLA an elevated presence on the road, enabling Mercedes-Benz’s compact SUV to navigate urban roads with ease.
Four colors are available for the GLA. Classic sophistication is the name of the game in Polar White, Cosmos Black metallic and Mountain Grey metallic, but opt for the designo Patagonia Red metallic and you’ll be sure to turn heads from office commute to school run.
Even so, the GLA isn’t all bark and no bite. The turbocharged 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine may be small, but it produces 163 horsepower that propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds, all the while just sipping 6 to 5.7 liters of petrol for every 100 kilometers traveled.
Last but not least, safety is always at the back of the mind for a family car, as the GLA can attest. Active safety features include the Blind Spot Assist to warn the driver of other motorists in their blind spot, while the Active Brake Assist can engage autonomous braking when the built-in radar system detects stationary objects or the odd jaywalking pedestrian on the road.
Completing the trifecta is the Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC, where the car scans its surroundings for parking space and maneuvers itself into the spot with no steering input required.
With all the boxes ticked, the Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 AMG Line certainly offers everything and the kitchen sink; a safe, stylish and serendipitous way of traveling.
