Bright lights, big city — an apt description of every metropolis imaginable, including capital city Jakarta.

With every inch of the capital buzzing and teeming with life at all hours, zipping around town is certainly a breeze for many of its inhabitants, thanks to ample lighting sources dotting the roads, from street lights to giant billboards.

But a short drive outside the city limits to Greater Jakarta’s mostly residential satellite cities, and it’s a whole different story altogether. With fewer towering skyscrapers and quieter gated communities, drivers must be extra alert when the sun goes down, making sure to keep on the lookout for other motorists and the occasional jaywalker.

While experienced drivers will probably possess a sixth sense for the road, accidents do and can occur. Perhaps a hard day’s work in the city can cloud one’s mind or sudden maneuvers from other motorists can catch one off guard, compounded by the lack of adequate lighting.

That’s where the Mercedes-Benz A 200 Sedan shines — pun intended.

The German automaker’s smallest sedan in its lineup is equipped with the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive system, which includes the Active Braking Assist feature as standard.

While all eyes must be on the road at all times, momentary distractions sometimes occur. With Active Braking System, the A 200 Sedan’s built-in radar system detects obstacles ahead, warning the driver with visual and audio cues.

When the system detects pressure on the brake pedal, it automatically applies the most effective brake pressure based on the speed. Even when the driver fails to react, the A 200 Sedan will engage autonomous braking to avoid a collision or mitigate the severity of the impact with stationary objects or crossing pedestrians.

Meanwhile, ease of parking is also kept in mind with the Active Parking Assist’s PARKTRONIC feature.

Simply with the push of a button, the A 200 Sedan will scan its surroundings for available parking spaces, which will show up on its dual 10.25-inch digital display. After selecting the desired space, follow the displayed instructions and the car will maneuver itself into place, with no steering input required.

At this point, it is quite clear that technological feats are at the heart of Mercedes-Benz, made manifest in its latest version of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) multimedia system.

Controlled through the choice of a touchscreen, center console-mounted touchpad, or Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel, the MBUX system allows the driver to access the various features of the A 200 Sedan, from navigation to tuning in to a favorite radio station.

At the same time, its voice activation feature allows for fewer distractions all around ensuring the driver can focus more on the road.

Say “Hey Mercedes”, and the car will respond to any queries it can handle, ranging from adjusting the climate control and displaying vehicle metrics to playing a particular song from a smartphone, which can connect via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

With all said and done, having control of the A 200 Sedan is a very comforting experience indeed. Gaze into the dual widescreen display from the power-adjustable seats finished in ARTICO leather, a blend of luxury and cutting edge combined with a carbon-look interior trim. Meanwhile, the standard Ambient Lighting marries function and form altogether, offering extra convenience while also enhancing the overall cabin mood.

Outside, the A 200 Sedan strikes an impressive figure. Despite being Mercedes-Benz’s smallest offering in its lineup, the A-Class Sedan embodies modernity with bold lines and dynamic styling, curves meeting edges in a harmonic embodiment of elegance and sportiness. Opt for classic understatement in Mountain Grey Metallic, Polar White or Cosmos Black Metallic, or go for the eye-catching Patagonia Red Metallic.

At the same time, the A 200 Sedan performs as well as it looks. Its turbocharged inline-4-cylinder engine makes around 163 horsepower mated to a seven-speed 7G-DCT automatic transmission, enabling the subcompact to go from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 8.1 seconds, all the while with a fuel consumption of 6 to 5.7 liters per 100 km.

As the popular Indonesian goes: kecil-kecil cabe rawit (small but powerful). The Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan packs a punch in every aspect, from looking good to feeling good.
