tarting Wednesday, the government is temporarily closing Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in East Jakarta for renovation work to improve the safety, security and convenience of flight operations.

The renovations encompass making improvements to the runway, taxiways, apron capacity and drainage system, as well as other work on several airport buildings.

The closure is estimated to last up to 3.5 months, according to Transportation Ministry spokeswoman Adita Irawati. The government and the Indonesian Air Force, which has a base at the airport, have briefed the airport operator and airlines to prepare for the temporary closure, including canceling flights, refunding tickets and rerouting flights to other airports.

“We also urge people who have purchased tickets for flights departing from Halim airport to contact their airlines for further [guidance on] handling the process,” Adita said in a press release provided on Friday.
