he Indonesian government has signed an agreement with Singapore on the manufacture of photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery energy storage systems (BESS) involving PT Adaro Clean Energy Indonesia, PT Medco Power Indonesia, PT Energi Baru TBS and other foreign and national companies.
The deal was inked on Thursday by Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan and Singapore’s Coordinating National Security Minister Teo Chee Hean at the Singapore-Indonesia Leaders’ Retreat, held in Singapore.
“Under this memorandum of understanding [MoU], Indonesia and Singapore will establish a cooperative institutional framework to facilitate investments in the development of renewable energy manufacturing industries in Indonesia and cross-border electricity trading projects between Indonesia and Singapore,” reads the press statement released by Luhut’s office on Thursday.
The minister said Indonesia had to become capable not only in exporting electricity but also in producing solar panels and batteries, hence the downstream effort in the sector.
Not only would this deal help in domestic manufacturing and the export of solar panels and BESS, hydrogen and ammonia could also be exported “when viable”. Furthermore, the release detailed that the two governments would work together to facilitate commercial arrangements.
“[Both] governments are concurrently reviewing promising commercial proposals that have the potential to meet [both countries’] requirements. Suitable proposals will be chosen and announced in due course,” the statement reads.
“Both governments remain open to receiving new commercial proposals that can meet our mutual needs,” it added.
