head of Indonesia’s leadership of next year’s 10th World Water Forum (WWF), the government has emphasized the need to raise awareness about water security and that water needs to be “the main political priority on both the local and global agenda”.

"Water security is a must,” Firdaus Ali, special advisor to the Public Works and Housing Ministry, told the media at the ministry’s offices on Tuesday, following a panel discussion titled “Road to the 10th World Water Forum”.

Water security was more important than food security, he said, because it “enables us to build our food security and establishes our energy security, as 98 percent of energy relies on water,” said Firdaus, who advises the ministry on water resources management.

With the world population reaching 8 billion, the world was confronting a water crisis driven by a drastic increase in demand, he warned, but at the same time “our water is contaminated and the infrastructure is inadequate”.

During the panel discussion, Firdaus mentioned that the government had constructed infrastructure to improve water supply, distribution and disaster control management.
