T

here has been a significant increase in the sale of electric vehicles (EVs) in the past months following a flurry of government incentives, the Industry Ministry says, but most of the purchases were made by people who already owned internal combustion engine cars rather than by first-time buyers.

Taufiek Bawazier, the ministry’s director general of metal, machinery, transportation equipment and electronics industries said on Wednesday that sales of EVs increased by 226 percent in July compared with April.

This was thanks to the implementation of government incentives to cut value-added tax to 1 percent from the previous 11 percent.

The government has pushed Indonesians to shift from fossil-fuel based vehicles to EVs in a bid to cut down the country’s pollution and boost its EV industry.

On August, Jakarta was deemed to be the most polluted city in the world for several weeks, according to the Air Quality Index (AQI) ranking by Swiss air quality tech company IQAir.

The Environment and Forestry Ministry estimated in August that 44 percent of pollution in Jakarta was produced by transportation, followed by power plants at 31 percent and the rest was spread around manufacturing and households.
