ndonesia's film industry passed a milestone last year when local content became the preferred choice among the domestic audience, surpassing Hollywood productions.
By September 2022, Indonesian productions had garnered an impressive viewership of more than 24 million, news agency Antara reported.
That figure included cinema productions as well as movies and serials streamed online through over-the-top (OTT) services. Indonesian cinema had established a dominant market position with a 61 percent audience share, surpassing the 39 percent audience share held by foreign films, according to the report.

Question: What has BASE Entertainment done right this year?
Shanty: We believe in collaboration. Let's take a look at what we did well in 2023. We worked with Miles Films on Petualangan Sherina 2, which was one of the five highest-grossing movies of all time [in Indonesia]. We also released two serials: Gadis Kretek [Cigarette Girl] on Netflix and Comedy Island on Prime Video, which is number one in both the Philippines and Indonesia.
Given those accomplishments, what is the outlook for the film industry? Have there been any changes in audience demographics, either at movie theaters or on streaming platforms?
