he government says it has been in talks with Renault about a possible investment in Indonesia following the imposition of a new regulation on electric vehicles (EVs).
Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said in a press briefing on Thursday that the investment from the French carmaker may materialize as soon as next year.
“We have met with Renault, and they are studying and planning to invest [in Indonesia],” said Agus, adding that the meeting took place recently.
According to the ministry’s website, Agus made a visit to France in early October, and a press statement released on Oct. 5 said he would have a meeting with an unspecified French automotive manufacturer during that visit.
In 2019, Jakarta approached Renault and Volvo with a request to consider building factories or assembly units in the archipelago, to no avail.
Renault was not immediately available to comment.
Agues went on to reveal that an unnamed Vietnamese auto manufacturer would invest in the country, too.
