residential candidate Ganjar Pranowo has suggested devising a key performance index (KPI) for ministers involving public input. Experts have called this a valid idea but said politics would get in the way.

Speaking at an event organized by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) on Thursday, Ganjar asked the audience whether creating a cabinet KPI was agreeable.

“Would you agree with creating a cabinet KPI for ministers? So, when they do not perform – and that’s for the people to judge, not me – then: ‘Hello, supporting [political] party, please replace [this minister!]’,” said Ganjar.

Earlier at the same event, while talking about business and state-owned enterprises (SOEs), the candidate suggested creating a government app through which the public could convey any grievances to the President, who would then take up the matter with the minister in charge.

Ganjar was the governor of Central Java prior to running for president, and during his term brought such an application, called LaporGub!, online at the provincial level.

A KPI of sorts for ministers already exists, since evaluating the performance of ministers is part of the job description of the Executive Office of the President. The novelty of Ganjar’s idea lies in the involvement of the public.
