A spokesperson for the state-owned company said it had created an artificial pond to prevent the oil spill from spreading to residents' rice fields.
T Pertamina EP Tanjung, a subsidiary of state-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina, has taken measures to contain an oil spill caused by a ruptured distribution pipe in Namun village, Tabalong regency, South Kalimantan.
PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) Region 3 Kalimantan communications and community involvement and development manager Dony Indrawan said the company had created an artificial pond to prevent the oil spill from spreading to residents' rice fields.
"We have localized the spill by creating an artificial pond so that the spill does not spread further," Dony said in Tabalong on Friday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
He added that Pertamina would provide compensation to residents of Namun village who had been affected by the oil spill and that the company had carried out an assessment of the spill’s impact.
"We collected data to estimate the impact felt by residents as a reference for providing compensation," Dony said.
The spill began on Wednesday evening when a trunkline pipe pumped by a sucker rod pump in Manunggul was activated to transfer oil to Balikpapan.
Tabalong Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Anib Bastian said a corroded portion of the old pipe had been unable to withstand the pressure and ruptured.
