"We will not continue that," said Prabowo-Gibran campaign spokesperson Eddy Soeparno during an event staged by Bloomberg.
residential candidate Prabowo Subianto vowed to not introduce another tax amnesty as a means to fix Indonesian taxpayers' compliance, his campaign team said on Tuesday.
Prabowo, who is running with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming Raka, instead would increase the country’s revenue by broadening the tax base and encouraging wealth declarations, his campaign team said.
“Indonesia, at this point, has exercised a few tax amnesties. One with success and [another] with minimum success, I would say. We will not continue that,” said Prabowo-Gibran campaign spokesperson Eddy Soeparno in an event staged by Bloomberg.
Under President Jokowi’s almost 10-year reign, the government has held two periods of tax amnesty, the first in 2016 and later in 2022, racking up Rp 114 trillion (US$7.21 billion) and Rp 61 trillion, respectively.
Both programs offered immunity from prosecution for taxpayers who previously did not comply with their tax obligations by paying a redemption fee and declaring their wealth.
The government defended the program by arguing it could help increase compliance and thereby lead to increased revenue in the future.
President Jokowi vowed in 2016 that the government would not make another tax amnesty in the future, before repeating the program more than five years later.
