Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan will lead the technical details of the project.
resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has asked a senior minister to coordinate planned Apple involvement in developing smart city infrastructure in the future capital city of Nusantara.
The President has assigned Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan to lead the technical aspects of the project.
"The technicalities will be discussed in [the related] ministries. President [Jokowi] will appoint Pak Luhut as the coordinator for the whole process," Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said in a press briefing on Wednesday.
Agus went on to say that Indonesia imported 2.79 million smartphones last year, of which 85 percent were iPhones at an annual value of US$2 billion.
Indonesia requires producers to meet a local content requirement (TKDN) of at least 35 percent for their products to be sold locally.
Apple has met the requirement by establishing the Apple Developer Academy in South Tangerang in Banten, Surabaya in East Java and Batam in Riau Islands. Apple announced on Tuesday that it would establish its fourth academy in Bali.
All academies are estimated to require a total investment of Rp 1.6 trillion ($98.75 million).
